It’s amazing what you find out if you ask! That’s my ongoing theme: ASK and you shall receive…..receive answers, receive opportunities, receive favor. And if you don’t ask, you eliminate yourself from opportunities. It doesn’t matter how much more experience and tenure someone else has…or even what their skill level is. What matters is, if you ask for what you want, and if it’s the right desire, you WILL receive it! A door will open!
If I knew then what I clearly know now, I would have applied for seasonal assistant manager-and maybe receive that opportunity….but I let my assumptions and lack of knowledge prevent me from going in on it. What I would find out later was, I could still apply for seasonal assistant manager as well as ambassador. Had I been chosen to be assistant manager, my ambassador slot would have gone to someone else. Opportunity missed. And just today, I almost lost another opportunity…. or I would have on down the line. The company just posted several new openings….one of which is that of trainer, a promotional opportunity. I assumed that, because I have not fulfilled 90 days in my current position, I would not be considered. An HR representative corrected my assumption. She clarified that the 90-day rule applied only to transfers, not promotions. With that major hurdle/excuse removed, I will submit my profile to that opening-and any others that I am interested in/qualified for and await the results.
The lesson here is never assume….never assume that the opportunity you want is closed to you. It is if you don’t submit yourself for consideration. Never make the excuse that there are others who have more experience/seniority. The possibility exists that those with more experience and/or seniority are not interested in the position or have disciplinary issues that would prevent them from submitting. Take those into consideration and proceed accordingly. That is how I got my weekends back…and also how I could possibly have placed myself in a position to move up!
