I interviewed for a promotion today…and I will interview for another tomorrow. But something tells me that they are NOT the best positions for me right now..that there is more that I have to do personally and professionally before I am prepared to step into those roles. While I think it’s wonderful that I scored those interviews, due in part to the strength of my resume, my work history, and the GM approval (an essential piece, I am told), I don’t think I’m ready. I have so much more that I need to work on…..like building a strong personal brand in my workplace.
I have specific goals to build my brand. The first part is already done: I have signed up for some committees. The second part is to do some projects with the committees that will increase my visibility and provide talking points for future opportunities. The third part: submit my application for seasonal ambassador…and be on the look-out for other seasonal positions (mainly seasonal trainer or PA). So, as I establish a presence on the committees, build a network, and branch out to learn new roles and new skills, I position myself as a strong, viable brand in the eyes of company officials–and that is WHAT I WANT. I want to be the one who brings her knowledge and expertise to the table and WORKS IT…one who goes the extra mile to ensure that the group gets the results they desire….one who is INVOLVED, hands-on (not micromanaging) with what is going on…one who can be depended upon to see things through…and one who is set apart…who is at the top of the pack.
Although at the end of the day I may not receive any of these offers, that is OK with me. I have some building to do….and that building starts now. I am eager to get started in making my mark.
